Lee Cooper and Footwork Arrows

1994 was an unusual year for the Footwork Arrows team. For reasons that I am ill-prepared to explain in detail, the team logo no longer appeared on the Footwork FA15 despite still being recognized as Footwork by the FIA. By appearances alone, it was a Grand Prix car without a name.

Something else Footwork Arrows didn’t have that year was a watch sponsor, so I was intrigued by this mention of the Lee Cooper sponsorship in issue #259 of Europa Star Asia:

As announced in our previous issue, Lee Cooper, the brand of jeans of international reputation has concluded a licence agreement with the Charpier Rième company, for the production and distribution of watches bearing their name.

The Charpier Rième design team, directed by Jean-Michel Oudot, has produced a collection of watches that reflect the young and innovative spirit of Lee Cooper.

When it was announced that Lee Cooper was sponsoring the “Arrows” team of the Grand Prix of Formula 1, Charpier Rième designed a “High-Tech” chronograph to complete this watch range.

Perhaps ironically, Lee Cooper did later become a dedicated watch brand, but did not yet have the same identity in 1994.
