Universal Genève SA was founded in 1894 as Universal Watch by horology students Ulysse Perret and Numa-Emile Descombes. Originally based in Le Locle, Universal was relocated to Geneva in 1919 by Perret, where their headquarters resides to this day.
World’s First Chronograph and Recent History
Universal Genève is credited with creating the world’s first chronograph in 1917. The Swiss brand has been owned by Hong Kong-based Stelux Holdings since 1989 until Partners Group, which also owns Breitling, announced the acquisition and relaunch of Universal Genève in December of 2023.
The brand formally returned to the market in April of 2026.
Nina Rindt
While not a licensed watch, the Universal Genève Compax (ref. 885103/02) was produced from 1964 to 1967 and is known amongst collectors as the “Nina Rindt”. Nina Rindt is a Finnish former supermodel and widow of Formula 1’s only posthumous world champion, Jochen Rindt, and was known to frequently wear the chronograph that has since become associated with her.
Interestingly, Rindt’s personal timepiece has non-standard hour, minute, and chronograph hands. The origins of these differences have since been forgotten, according to the FAQ section of Alpha Hands.
Ayrton Senna Institute
Universal Genève signed a five-year partnership with the Ayrton Senna Institute in 1997 and announced a collection called SENNA BY UNIVERSAL (also marketed as “Senna Watch by Universal Genève”), as part of a rebuilding of the brand. Two lines of limited edition models were produced: the Universal Genève Senna 41 chronograph to commemorate his 41 Formula 1 race wins, and the Universal Genève Senna 65 three-hander in honor of his 65 Formula 1 pole positions. The Senna 41 came in both an automatic (ref. 998.310) and quartz (ref. 975.310) versions, with different corresponding subdial layouts. All models were available in a variety of dial colors.
A limited edition Senna 41 sold exclusively for the Netherlands has been documented by Fratello. The same reference number is retained, and comes with a leather strap and was available in a numbered edition of 50 pieces. An 18k gold version of the the Senna 41 was also mentioned in the same article.
Proceeds from sales went to Instituto Ayrton Senna, an anti-poverty charity started by the late Brazilian legend’s sister, Vivianne. The organization has been recommended by Bernie Ecclestone and Sir Frank Williams, as well as by Senna’s former rivals Alain Prost and Gehard Berger.
Max Biaggi
According to the August 1998 issue of Revue FH, Max Biaggi began serving as an ambassador for Universal Genève on April 1, 1998. This is supported by the brand’s logo appearing on Biaggi’s leathers during his rookie 500cc season, while riding for Marlboro Kanemoto Honda.
Universal Genève branding continued to occasionally appear on Biaggi’s leathers during the 1999 season, after a switch to Yamaha. Biaggi has also featured in Universal Genève print ads and other marketing materials, often promoting the contemporary Compax chronograph.
