The Ingersoll Watch Company was originally founded by Robert H. Ingersoll and Charles Ingersoll in 1892, and was based in New York City. The brand’s first watches were originally supplied by the Waterbury Clock Company, which would later become Timex.
The brand went bankrupt in 1921 and was purchased by the Waterbury Clock Company in the following year, and became a British-owned brand in the process. Ingersoll watches would be produced by the Waterbury Clock Company through its rebranding to Timex until the 1950s.
As of 1989, the brand has been owned by Zeon.
Barry Sheene
Ingersoll branding appeared on the racing leathers of Barry Sheene during certain rounds of the 1978 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season, including at Jarama, Assen, Karlskoga, and Silverstone.
The apparent absence of the watch brand on teammate Pat Hennen’s gear as well as both of the team’s RG500 Grand Prix bikes suggests that this may have been a personal sponsorship for Sheene.
According to the January 1979 issue of Revue européenne de l’horlogerie-bijouterie, Sheene was present at the Ingersoll booth at the previous September’s International Watch and Jewellery Fair.
Team Ingersoll Heron Suzuki
The Ingersoll Watch Company was announced as a sponsor of Heron Suzuki, which fielded Randy Mamola and Graeme Crosby during the 1981 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. The logo appeared on the lower fairings of that year’s Suzuki RG500, as well as on both riders’ racing suits.
