TAG Heuer‘s sponsorship of Norifumi Abe is relatively unusual, given the Swiss brand’s longstanding association with Formula 1.
Abe’s racing leathers had already featured TAG Heuer branding during his 1994 wildcard appearances, including his memorable Grand Prix debut at Suzuka. The logo also appeared on the Japanese rider’s helmet in 1994 and 1995, and featured on his leathers from 1995 through 2003 as a full time Grand Prix motorcycle racer.
Few details of the partnership seem to remain. One published account features former racing mechanic Masahiko Iwata, who recollects being gifted a TAG Heuer watch by Abe after the 2000 Japanese motorcycle Grand Prix.
While this appears to be the most recent instance of TAG Heuer on a Grand Prix motorcycle grid, it certainly wasn’t the first. The Swiss brand was a technical partner of the Parisienne-Elf team in the 250cc class in 1987 and 1988. Heuer had also included Johnny Cecotto in its lineup of Cavallino helmet clocks during the mid-1970s.
