Mika Salo

Mika Juhani Salo (born November 30, 1966) is a Finnish former racing driver and FIA steward who raced in Formula 1 from 1994 until 2002. Salo notably replaced an injured Michael Schumacher at Ferrari for six rounds of the 1999 season, during which he scored two podium finishes.

Lotus

Salo made his Formula 1 debut at the 1994 Japanese Grand Prix for Lotus, and also contested the final round of the season with the English team. The team folded immediately afterwards.

Tyrrell

Salo was signed by Tyrrell in 1995, and spent a total of three seasons with the team. He scored points on seven occasions, with a best result of fifth which he achieved five times.

Arrows

The Finnish driver raced for Arrows in 1998, with a 4th place result at the Monaco Grand Prix as his best and only points-scoring finish of the season.

British American Racing and Scuderia Ferrari

Salo started the 1999 season without a full time Formula 1 seat, but replaced an injured Ricardo Zonta at British American Racing (BAR) for three rounds near the start the season. During his stint as a replacement driver, Salo would score the team’s best result of the year at Imola.

The pinnacle of Salo’s Formula 1 career would come just four rounds after his stint at BAR when the Finnish driver replaced an injured Michael Schumacher at Ferrari. The Finnish driver scored two podiums during this time which helped Ferrari win the 1999 Constructor’s title, while he himself finished 10th overall in the driver’s standings despite not having a full time seat.

Sauber and Toyota

Salo was signed by Sauber for the 2000 season. He scored points on four occasions, and left the team to join Toyota. With 2001 spent preparing for the Japanese team’s entry, 2002 turned out to be Salo’s final season in Formula 1 after scoring on two occasions and finishing 17th overall.

Pook Watches

Finnish watch brand Pook announced Salo as a brand ambassador in 2022, and the Pook Mika Salo Racing Limited Edition was announced on June 19 of that year. The timepiece was designed by brand founder Andreas Prepula in collaboration with Salo himself, with the dial and case back featuring the Finnish driver’s name and limited to 100 pieces.
